Royal Naval Writers’ Association

The World’s Oldest Military Association – Est. 1887

Newsletter – August 2023

Foreword from the President

Fellow Scribes,

The year marches on and we are rapidly approaching the Reunion dinner and the Annual General Meeting.  The Committee have been busy revising the Rules of the Association and have decided on a version that hopefully will not need any revision for quite a while.  We thought that last time, when we updated them in 2021 so we shall have to see.

The revised rules have been placed on the website. In place of those dated 2021.  Please peruse them so that the Committee can discuss them at the next meeting on 21st September.  A final version will then be placed on the agenda for the AGM. Following on from a request to members for suggestions on how to spend the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) Fund, one that stood out was the

planting of a tree and plaque, in memory of those Writers who lost their lives in conflict since the foundation of the branch, in a naval

establishment. Following discussions, the only place that seemed to fit the bill and be seen by future Writers was the College of Logistics, Policing & Administration (DCLPA) at Worthy Down now the home of Writer training for the foreseeable future. I made a tentative enquiry at the College and was pleasantly surprised that the suggestion was greeted with enthusiasm.

On 23rd August the Secretary and I attended a meeting, and several options were discussed inter alia a tree and plaque, bench, and plaque and all three.  Having toured the possible sites, one stood out being on one of the main paths around the site. We are now waiting for one of the support staff to forward estimates of the cost of various options which we hope to receive in time for discussion at the next scheduled committee & members meeting but certainly by the AGM.

I very much look forward to hearing your future thoughts and comments, but I personally think, and I’m sure you’ll agree, it will be all down to budget and cost, combined with ‘Value for Money’ and what about the future costs i.e., upkeep and maintenance
