Royal Naval Writers’ Association

The World’s Oldest Military Association – Est. 1887

February 2023 Newsletter

Foreword from the President

‘Fellow Scribes’

I hope you had a very happy Christmas and have avoided the flu and covid and the New year is being kind to you all. Now that the days are drawing out it is time to start planning for the Spring and the obvious event that reminds us of this is the Grand National draw. Tickets are therefore included with this newsletter except to those abroad. In order to save on postage the committee would be grateful if those abroad could request for tickets by email, forwarding the cost by cheque or bank transfer, using GN as the reference. The Secretary will enter the ticket stubs on your behalf informing you of your ticket draw numbers. Of course, those living abroad without an email will receive this newsletter and tickets via post.

On the 22nd of September 2022 the RNWA Committee had a very enjoyable and informative visit to the Defence College of Logistics, Policing and Administration (DCLPA) at Worthy Down, King’s Worthy, Winchester, Hants., SO21 2RG and observed the Writers under training, as well as visiting the other Logistic branches training facilities.

An excellent lunch was provided by the Catering Training Wing. The RNWA Committee thought it would be a good idea to extend the visits to its members and I am pleased to report that the idea was welcomed and agreed by DCLPA. The college have therefore generously agreed to host (subject to demand) three (3) visits during 2023. The first two members and their wives are visiting DCLPA on Thursday 9th March. It will I’m sure be very interesting to hear about their visit and feedback. The next dates for visits will be Thursday 13th July (request to attend to be submitted and received by 15th June) and Thursday 16th November (advise by 12th October). Full details and information are available via the website.

Regretfully the scheduled online committee and members meeting of the 19th of January ‘failed’. This was due to a change of Google software updates which has now been rectified and a completely new link established. Please see over for the new details and dates. Keep safe and healthy!

“Crossed The Bar”

George Mytom-Hart BEM recently passed away on the 10th of January 2023 and the RNWA Committee and members attended Portchester Crematorium on Thursday 2nd February with Phil ‘Darby’ Allen MBE carrying the RNWA Standard with the last post being played. Amusingly George volunteered to be the RNWA’s Treasurer for eight weeks which in fact turned out to be 8 years before handing over to Pat Prior BEM QVRM.
